Witchhazels
Hamamelis sp.

'Rochester'
‘Rochester’ is a hybrid witchhazel developed around 1960 at Durand-Eastman Park in Rochester, New York. This deciduous shrub grows up to 9 feet tall and wide, showcasing clusters of very fragrant, copper-orange flowers along bare stems in mid-winter. Some leaves may remain during flowering, providing a contrast to the vibrant orange and red blooms, however can take away from the blooms a bit.
'Wisley Supreme'
Hamamelis mollis ‘Wisley Supreme,’ a cultivar from RHS's Wisley Garden near London, features sweetly scented, pale-yellow flowers. The large blooms emerge in late winter before the leaves.

'Diane'
'Brevipetala'
This upright, vase-shaped shrub reaches 9-12 feet tall and wide. It has sweetly scented, deep ochre-yellow flowers that bloom in mid to late winter, featuring crinkled petals tinged with red at the base. The remaining leaves in winter provide a lovely contrast to the vibrant yellow blooms when up close.

'Quasimodo'
Hamamelis vernalis 'Quasimodo' is a semi-dwarf selection, introduced to the European nursery industry in 1980, reaches a maximum height and width of 6-7 feet. It is known for its highly fragrant, small light orange flowers and a compact, upright, and dense mounding habit. Hamamelis vernalis is native to the southern and central United States.
'Harry'
'Harry' features orange-yellow flowers and is among the first witch hazels to bloom in mid-February. Each flower has four narrow, ribbon-like petals, each up to 1 inch long, with a purple calyx. The blooms emit a mild fragrance.

'Moonlight'
Each flower has four narrow, curled, and crinkled yellow petals with a deep red calyx. The fragrant blooms contrast beautifully (even from a distance) with the dark brown, textured leaves that remain throughout flowering, enhancing the pale-yellow spidery flowers.
'Aphrodite'
‘Aphrodite’ has orange-red flowers. The petals are complemented by a reddish-purple calyx, although the flowers are not very fragrant.

'Jelena'
‘Jelena’ typically grows slowly to 8-12 feet tall and features sweetly fragrant copper flowers with four narrow, crinkly petals that showcase reddish bases, orange centers, and yellow tips.
